What is ICF (Insulated concrete forms)

Insulating concrete forms are pre-formed modular units, forming a “hat” of interlocking blocks or panels with polystyrene or polyurethane foam filling and set in concrete. The inside space is then filled with a lightweight aggregate, such as expanded polystyrene. Once cured, these panels can be easily transported to the building site for assembly into walls that are typically 18 inches (46 cm) thick and have insulated cavities between two layers of rigid insulation on either side.

Basic steps of ICF Home Building

• Part of ICF’s process for digging into a property is making an appropriate site preparation plan.
• Footings should be made and reinforced in accordance with the engineer’s instructions.
• Lay the concrete footing forms. Finish the footings to make a level surface for stacking the ICF blocks.
• Stack the ICF blocks.
• Install vertical bracing around the whole structure to stabilize it and prevent any components from falling down.
• It is important to inspect all the reinforcement, straps, and bracing before pouring concrete into a block.
• Put the concrete into the walls using a line pump or boom.
• Use a mechanical vibrator to internally vibrate the concrete and remove all air pockets within the wall.
• Level off the concrete until it is even with the block top, then wet set anchor bolts into the concrete surface.
• Remove the bracing and clean bracing.
